: In 1822, Wakamatsu was founded in the port city of Yawatahama as an indigo dyer shop. Currently in its fifth generation, the shop protects its traditions of hand-dyeing by drafting with the ashes of a paulownia tree, and gluing the hand dye. While they handle a large variety of dyes including large banners, shrines and temples, the dyes are also used in daily-use items or for interior accents at shopping malls. It can even be used to engrave presents for newborns with their names, and enjoyed as the child also grows.
